Professor Dr. Mevlüt Karataş was born in 1977 in the Karatay district of Konya, Turkey. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Trabzon. In 2001, he graduated from the English Faculty of Medicine at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa. He began his professional career in 2002 as a general practitioner in the Hayrat district of Trabzon.
In 2007, he worked as a research fellow in the Department of Pulmonology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in the United States.
Dr. Karataş obtained his specialization in Chest Diseases and Tuberculosis in 2009. Between 2012 and 2014, he served as Deputy Chief Physician at Trabzon Kanuni Training and Research Hospital. In 2014, he began working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chest Diseases, Faculty of Medicine, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University. Between 2016 and 2018, he served as a Specialist Doctor in the Interventional Pulmonology Clinic at Ankara Atatürk Chest Diseases and Thoracic Surgery Training and Research Hospital. From 2018 to 2021, he was the Chief Physician at the Ankara Occupational and Environmental Diseases Hospital. Between 2021 and 2023, he served as the Founding Chief Physician/Chief Physician at Ankara Mamak State Hospital. In 2019, he earned the title of Associate Professor in Chest Diseases.
From 2023 to 2024, Dr. Karataş served as the Chief Physician of the Somalia Turkey Mogadishu Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Training and Research Hospital. During this period, he initiated the first open-heart surgeries in Somalia's history. He also led the establishment of a 120-bed maternity and children's hospital in the Hodan region of Mogadishu. In 2024, he worked as a faculty member at the Ibn Sina Faculty of Medicine, Bukhara, Uzbekistan, under the University of Health Sciences. In 2025, he was appointed to the Department of Chest Diseases at the Ankara Atatürk Sanatorium SUAM, University of Health Sciences, and in the same year, he was awarded the title of Professor.
Dr. Karataş has also held various roles in non-governmental organizations. From 2017 to 2023, he served as the President of the Ankara Branch and Regional Coordinator of the Turkish Green Crescent Society. He has volunteered with many national and international aid organizations.
Fluent in English, Dr. Karataş has published articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals and has presented papers at scientific conferences. His work also includes technical notes, case reports, and research briefs. He is married and has three children.
On May 16, 2025, upon the recommendation of our President, Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prof. Dr. Mevlüt Karataş was appointed as the Rector of Çankırı Karatekin University.
